Motivation vs. Discipline: Which is Crucial for Success in Life?

We all aspire to succeed. Success demands so many things. However, motivation and discipline play an essential role in attaining success. There are a variety of people with different problems. More or less, we all want the same thing: a house, a car, and sufficient funds to face the unforeseen situation. But the path to achieve is different for all. The various problems have made some people circle in their roundabout life. They get trapped that nothing works in their favor. Some people do make attempts but need to catch up. They are determined to change their lives, but the determination doesn't last long.

Right Direction

To cook delicious food, you need ingredients in a limit. However, a pan, ladle, and stove is the primary thing to start cooking. Then, the ingredients will do their wonders. Likewise, to succeed, you need motivation and discipline, that is basic to begin your journey. Then, other things like determination, hard work, consistency, patience, and perseverance will do the magic. However, there is a long debate that discipline takes over motivation. Read till the end, and you will have your own opinion.

Motivation: Why is it the first thing you need to start?

There is a reason we are unable to start. A nudge, a sudden push, can help us begin. This can only come through motivation. Motivation is in spontaneity. You will be lethargic for a week. Suddenly, you will start to change your life.

The quote is my favorite quote about motivation.

Zig Zagler Quote

You wake up in the morning and do not necessarily want to get up. Right from here, your daily dose of motivation starts. A weak person's mind gets wired not fully to act without stimulation. Your tomorrow is going to be different from today. There could be a different challenge awaiting you the following day. It should be okay with what you decide to do. So, your motivation should be at an all-time high when starting something.

However, motivation is so sudden that it vanishes fast. A pertinent reason you should consider is discipline.

Important Note: While motivation can ignite your passion, it is discipline that sustains your efforts and leads to long-term success. Cultivating discipline ensures consistent progress towards your goals, even when motivation wanes.

To keep your motivation intact, you need enthusiasm.

You might be wondering, between motivation and discipline, I brought enthusiasm. Let me explain it.

After setting a goal, you start working for it. So many people quit before they become disciplined. However, even when you stop working, don't you still want the thing? The desire to have that thing is still there, but the willingness to act vanishes. Why is that so?

There could be any reason for leaving. I am considering not getting favorable results or getting lost in daily chores. Keeping your enthusiasm intact will make you less likely to lose motivation. Don't let your spirit go into the cold basket.

Discipline: You should have to continue doing the work.

It doesn't matter how motivated you are. You will be able to grow once you follow discipline. Remember, growth happens if you have a routine. You will progress, but not at a speed that might decrease your enthusiasm. Hence, you might feel unmotivated towards your work. That is why discipline is essential to continue doing tasks.

Understand it with an example: If you habitually scroll social media before sleep. How easily do you think you can control it?

You can't become disciplined in a single day because replacing old habits is essential. You plan to change your life. Can you change it without fixing your old self? To do similar work, you must believe this is the only thing that can change you. Gradually, you will adapt to new things you are trying to do. Until then, you must be motivated to continue doing tasks daily.

Different from motivation, discipline only vanishes slowly. Because when you become disciplined, you can feel the difference in you.

When discipline takes over motivation or vice versa?

To start anything, you need 100% motivation. As you get a system, discipline will slowly take over. When you are disciplined, 20% motivation and 80% discipline will work fine for you. You might disagree, but You must stay motivated to be disciplined. That energy should be in you to push you to do the work.

Discipline

You have to overcome your old habits to become disciplined. For example, waking up early or at a fixed time takes work. Suppose a person has struggled in the past with it. They can't change their habits in one day. As with regular effort, you will become disciplined, and this process will take over motivation slowly.

Conclusion

You must have watched many motivational videos or read success stories on social media. There is nothing wrong with it. I, too, have watched. Why the motivation you got from such videos didn't last? Because they were unable to create the longingness in you.

I am sharing my experience. I no longer want to live life in misery. I am working to have my dream life, that big house or a car. How can you not do things to have in your life?

I suggest you make your life ordeals motivation. The motivation to change your life should come from within. You no longer want this life. It will last longer and help you build the momentum to become disciplined.

The desire and the grit should be in you to succeed in life. Otherwise, you might have to settle for your mediocre life.
